A storyboard is an animated plan, a way of figuring out the story of the film before actually starting to shot. Basically, it's the story of the movie drawn in pictures, by hand or digitally, very much like a comic strip.

Story boarding is extremely helpful as it saves you both time and money on the filming day, as you already know what are you doing and how are you doing it. Moreover, it's very important during editing as you have a clear order of shots, one after another, so your editor doesn't feel confused and doesn't "invent" anything, so the outcome matches your expectations.
